Crosswalk Clearing in Roy: What the Work Involves
Crosswalk clearing is hand work. A crew member shovels the crossing from curb to curb, clears the curb ramps on both sides, and removes snow piled where the ramp meets the street. Then we treat the surface with ice melt so a thin film does not refreeze.
Roy's pattern shapes the job. Only 1.1 days a year stay below freezing all day, and just 1.8 days bring 1 in or more of snow. But there are 42 freezing nights between October and April, and about 3.45 light-snow days a year need deicing. Many calls are about a dusting or a refreeze, not deep snow. Past events show the range: heavy snow on Dec 21, 2008, an ice storm on Jan 19, 2012, and heavy snow on Feb 8, 2014 and Feb 8, 2019.
Here is how pricing works for this service:
- Crew member, shoveling and hand work: $110 per person-hour
- Ice melt, bagged: $45 per 50 lb bag
- Trip charge for Roy (zone D): $525 per dispatch
- 2-hour minimum per dispatch
Roy is 104 minutes from our Bothell yard, so the trip charge and minimum apply to each dispatch. If a heavier pile needs machine work, a Kubota SCL1000 compact track loader with operator is $175 per hour.
