Roof raking removes the first several feet of snow along the eaves, which is the zone where ice dams form and where load matters most. Performed safely from the ground with an extension rake, it avoids the hazards of climbing onto a snow-covered roof. In the Puget Sound climate, where daytime melt and cold nights alternate, keeping the eaves clear stops the meltwater that would otherwise refreeze into a dam. Regular raking after each snowfall is one of the simplest ways to protect a home through winter.
