Bike Lane Clearing in Roy: How Local Snow Shapes the Work
Roy does not get snow often. An average season brings 6.2 in, and only 1.8 days a year see 1 in or more. Just 1.1 days a year stay below freezing. Even so, there are 42 freezing nights between October and April, and ice on a bike lane is a bigger risk to riders than snow.
Bike lanes are tight. Plows push snow into them from the road, and a wide blade does not fit between a curb and a parked car. We use crew members with shovels for short or narrow sections. We bring the Kubota SCL1000 compact track loader with an operator for longer runs and for berms left by road plows.
Light snow matters here too. About 3.45 days a year bring light snow that needs deicing. On those days, we spread bagged ice melt on the lane instead of clearing it by hand.
Big storms do happen. Roy saw 15.4 in over Feb 11 to 15, 2021, with 7.1 in on the biggest day. In Jan 2012, 12.9 in fell, and 8.3 in fell on the biggest day. Storms like these need heavier equipment.
