How We Clear Wheelchair Ramps in Roy, WA
Ramps need careful hand work. A machine can gouge the surface or damage the rails, so our crew members shovel and scrape the ramp, landings and approach by hand. We then treat the surface with ice melt so it stays safe to roll on.
Roy does not get snow often. It sees about 1.8 days a year with 1 in or more of snow and about 4 days with snow on the ground. But storms can be large. The Feb 11-15, 2021 storm left 15.4 in in total, with 7.1 in on the biggest day. Feb 5-6, 2017 brought 9.9 in, and Nov 22-23, 2010 brought 7.3 in.
Roy also has 42 freezing nights from October to April. Meltwater and light frost can refreeze on a ramp even when there is little snow to shovel. That is why ice treatment is part of the job.
What the work includes:
- Shoveling and scraping the ramp surface and landings
- Clearing the path from the ramp to the driveway or street
- Spreading bagged ice melt on the cleared surface
Pricing is a crew member at $110 per person-hour, bagged ice melt at $45 per 50 lb bag, and a Roy trip charge of $525 per dispatch. There is a 2-hour minimum per dispatch. Our Bothell yard is 104 minutes from Roy, so call early when snow is forecast.
