When an arctic blast pushes surface temperatures into the single digits or teens across the Cascade foothills and higher-elevation neighborhoods, calcium chloride keeps melting long after sodium chloride has quit. The pellets pull moisture from the air and release heat as they dissolve, giving them a fast exothermic bite on hard-packed ice. We reserve this material for the coldest events and the shaded, north-facing surfaces that the low winter sun never reaches. Careful metering matters because calcium chloride is more aggressive and more expensive than everyday salt.
